Our roots ~ "Tekijyuku" of Koan Ogata

“Tekijyuku”-a medical school in Osaka in late Edo era established by Koan Ogata, a physician- turned out many prominent persons such as Yukichi Fukuzawa and Masujiro Omura, who had greatly contributed to modernization of Japan. Many excellent doctors were brought up in“Osaka Jyoto-kan”, an adjunct facility of Tekijyuku, where vaccination against smallpox was begun. When we trace the roots of Faculty of Medicine of Osaka University, it connects with Tekijyuku through the network of Jyoto-kan. And, the Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases of Osaka University is descended from this glorious history.
