Development of next generation vaccines using new ideas and advanced technology.
Vaccines are developed based on academic achievement that have been obtained after much trial. We aim to develop and produce new vaccines requested by society by overcoming problems in modern medical biology with new ideas and advanced technology.
Development of a novel influenza vaccine for pandemic
Global human infections with a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus type H5N1 since 2004 have caused increasing concern about the next pandemic influenza like Spanish pandemic in 1918.
An Inactivated influenza vaccine for the next pandemic was prepared using a H5N1 strain attenuated by reverse genetics method. This vaccine was approved in 2007. Stockpiling of the vaccine is underway to cooperate with government's crisis management.
Development of fish disease vaccines
BIKEN developed“inactivated iridovirus vaccine”as the first injection vaccine for fish in Japan and
the first effective vaccine against viruses in sea fish in the world.Besides,BIKEN succeeded in developing“Inactivated lridovirus-Strepto-coccicosis-Vibriosis Combined Vaccine”that prevents the iridovirus disease,α-hemolytic streptococcicosis,and Vibrio anguillarum(J-O-3).
Since the measures against fish diseases change from“treatment”to“prevention”,an increase in the demand for fish disease vaccines is expected. We make further efforts to develop and improve vaccines.
For development of the better vaccines
The effort to answer needs of the society, and for an existing vaccine to improve further is continued. The certain technology and device supported by the basic research succeed in making of the preservation medicine contained in the development of the combined vaccine and a lot of inactivated vaccines free in recent years.
BIKEN will open ways to put desired vaccines into use such as development of vaccines useful for people's QOL (Quality of life).
