The Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases of Osaka University (hereinafter, “BIKEN”), announces that its project, “Development of an Intranasally Administered Live Attenuated Vaccine Against COVID-19,” has been selected for the “Vaccine and Novel Modality Research and Development Program (Open Call)” conducted by the Strategic Center of Biomedical Advanced Vaccine Research and Development for Preparedness and Response (SCARDA) of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).

The program provides strategically support for research and development during peacetime to ensure the rapid delivery of safe and effective vaccines against designated infectious diseases in the event of an emergency, both in Japan and around the world.

Through this project, BIKEN aims to develop a vaccine that provides protection against infection through mucosal immunity, offers long-lasting immunity and broad protection, and can be rapidly supplied even in the event of an infectious disease emergency.
